Abstract
841,592. Cycle driving gear. POWELL, H. V. Jan. 29, 1959 [Oct. 29, 1957], No. 33652/57. Classes 79(2) and 79(3). In a motor assisted bicycle. having a variable speed belt drive 18 Fig. 1 with an expanding pulley 14 the engine 4 is rigidly secured to the rear of the seat pillar 9 and transmits the drive to a belt pulley 19 mounted between arms 21 pivoted at 22 near the rear wheel axle 23 and angularly movable as by cable 28 under the control of the cyclist to vary the belt tension. The drive from pulley 19 is transmitted to the rear wheel through a chain 26 and sprockets 25, 27. A spring 29 supports the weight of the arms 21 and 6 so that neutral gear conditions are obtained when the belt is slackened by release of the cable 28. The engine mounting comprises a bar 8, on the pillar stays 5, which is bolted at 7 to the crank case. A stay 10 is also connected between the seat pillar 9 and a bolt 10a on the cylinder head.
