Abstract

160,501. Church ward, W. P. Nov. 24, 1919. Treadle mechanism.-Bicycles, tricycles, boats, aerial machines, &c. propelled by foot-actuated levers which impart motion to the driving- element through free-wheel mechanism and a combined spur-wheel and endless-chain multiplying-gear, have the gear enclosed in a casing 6 to form a unit adapted to support the operator. The gear comprises a spur-wheel 24 on the shaft 36 driven by the free-wheel mechanism, a pinion 25 driven by the wheel 24, and then either a spur-wheel train 26 ... 30 with flywheel 31, or an endless chain, driving a front sprocket-wheel 8. The casing is supported at the rear on the wheel axle and extended upwards to form the saddle or seat pillar or support 6<1>, the front of the casing being supported by a spring 4 either on the fork 3 of a bicycle steering-wheel or on the cross-bar carrying the parallel steering-wheels of a tricycle. The pedals 21 are adjustable, as by a screw-thread, upon swinging rods 17 adjustably attached to the levers 18 which are provided at the front ends with counterweights 19.
