Apparatus for stacking bricks preparatory to their transport to the kiln comprises a conveyer 2 for bringing individual batches of bricks 3 in line with means 1 for feeding them on to a table 5 or further conveyer, a device for pushing the batch on to a table 8 composed of movable plates which separate the bricks, and gripping means 18 for transferring the separated bricks to and stacking them on a truck, &c. 26 for carrying them to the kiln. The dried bricks are arranged on slats 4 in a cage 2 which is lowered to bring each batch opposite a reciprocating pusher 1 for transfer to the table 5. The batches are swept on to the table 8 by a pusher 6, the table surface being made up of pairs of plates 10, each plate supporting a brick and each pair being capable of being moved away from adjacent pairs to cause the bricks to be separated as shown in Fig. 2. The plates 10 are mounted on members slidable on rods and connected by levers for movement by hydraulic &c. means. The separated bricks are gripped between plates 19, 20 carried on a transporter head slidable vertically on a rotatable pillar 23. The plates are closed or separated by linkage operated by pressure devices 21. The pillar 23 is rotatable about a vertical axis to bring the batch over the kiln truck 26. The batch may be rotated relative to the head about a shaft 181 so that alternate layers of the bricks may be stacked transversely.
