Abstract
800,307. Toothed gearing. UNITED STATES STEEL CORPORATION. Nov. 25, 1955 [Jan. 27, 1955], No. 33911/55. Class 80 (1). [Also in Group XXII] A cyclically varying speed drive for a pair of shafts 36, 44, particularly for driving the rotating shear blade drum 4 and flywheel 48 of a flying shear for cutting strip metal into lengths, comprises a constant speed shaft 20 which drives a shaft 28 through a pair of centre rotated elliptical gears 24, 26, and focus rotated elliptical gears 32, 34, 42 coupling the shaft 28 to the shafts 36, 44. The first elliptical gear 24 is disposed with its minor axis in line with the major axis of the second gear 26 when the major axes of the gears 32, 34, 42 are in line. This arrangement provides a constant speed of shaft 20 midway between the maximum and minimum values of the speed of shaft 36 and 44. As applied to a flying shear the shaft 20 is driven through a variable-speed transmission 14 from a motor 6 which also drives the feed rolls 2 for the metal strip S to be cut. A second cooperating shear drum is provided beneath the drum 4. A flywheel 48 is driven from the elliptical gear 32 by a further elliptical gear 42 meshing therewith so that whilst shaft 36 is being driven at its maximum speed the flywheel is driven at minimum speed and vice versa. In an alternative arrangement the three focus rotated. elliptical gears are arranged before the centre rotated gears, the middle gear driving and the shafts of the outer ones being coupled through pairs of centre rotated elliptical gears to the shear blade drum and flywheel respectively.
