Abstract
722,765. Forging-machines. SMITH, S. Sept. 11, 1953 [Sept. 29, 1952], No. 24298/52. Class 83 (4). A swaging machine having a number of dies radially slidable in a fixed head and actuated by a rotatable fly-wheel surrounding the head, has combined therewith a feed mechanism comprising a rotatable cage 12 containing one or more pairs of rollers 15, 15<SP>1</SP> rotatably mounted on transverse axes and driven from the rotatable cage, the workpiece 9 being gripped between each pair of rollers whereby it is fed axially whilst being rotated about its longitudinal axis. The rollers have grooved peripheries and are driven through meshing gears 16, 161 by worms 18, 18<SP>1</SP> mounted on a shaft 17 carrying a planet gear 19 meshing with a stationary gear 20 on the frame of the feed mechanism. Alternatively a V-belt drive may be used instead of the planet gearing. A feed mechanism may be mounted on both the input and output ends of the swaging machine, both mechanisms being driven from a common electric motor by V-belts. Specification 622,389 is referred to.
