Class 29 In a compression system for supplying liquid nitrogen, air, oxygen or helium to chill material in one or more containers 1, each and every stage 24 of the compressor is separately and simultaneously by-passed when the supply of gaseous refrigerant in the suction line 23 drops below a certain value. As shown the pressure in line 23 is detected by a device 32 which actuates a motor 30 which, through shaft 31, operates by-pass valves 28. Inter-coolers 26 are provided between the compressor stages. The liquid supply valves 3 to the containers are controlled in accordance with the pressure in the suction pipes 7 to maintain the pressure within the containers substantially atmospheric.
