Abstract

708,664. Cold separation of air. BRITISH OXYGEN CO., Ltd., and SCHUFTAN, P. M. Oct. 14, 1952 [Oct. 17, 1951], No. 24266/51. Class 8 (2). In an air separation process comprising liquefaction and subsequent rectification wherein the cold supplied is equal to the average requirement of the plant, the temperature gradient in the rectification zone is automatically maintained substantially unchanged and independent of temporary variations in the refrigeration performance of the plant. A vapour pressure thermometer 6 is located at a point 7 of maximum temperature gradient in the low pressure zone of a conventional double column and the temperature gradient is maintained constant by a valve 4 actuated by a controller 5 and controlling flow at oxygen-rich liquid from the sump 1 of the high pressure zone through a line 2 to a tray 3. The capacity of the sump 1 is made sufficiently high to allow of variations in level caused by variations in demand by the low pressure zone. In a modification the temperature gradient is maintained constant by withdrawing excess liquid formed when the refrigeration applied exceeds the demand, storing it and automatically returning it to the rectification column when the cold demand exceeds the refrigeration supply.
