Abstract

795,669. Tilting pad bearings. WESTLAND AIRCRAFT, Ltd. Feb. 2, 1956 [Feb. 2, 1955], No. 3102/55. Class 12 (1). In a Michell-type bearing, journal pads c, d, e are self-aligningly mounted in a housing b by adjustable radial pins f having spherical ends which engage conical cavities in the pads. Similarly mounted pads g, h are provided to take axial thrusts. Lubricant is introduced, through ports in webs m, n, o, close to the leading edge of each of the thrust pads c, d, e and the discharge from these pads is used to lubricate the pads g, h. In a modification, oil ducts are provided in the pins f and in the journal pads. The bearing may be used in engines mounted on the tips of a helicopter rotor blade, fuel oil being used as lubricant.
