Abstract

766,531. Stuffing-box substitutes. GODFREY (HANWORTH), Ltd., [formerly GODFREY & PARTNERS (HOLDINGS), Ltd., Sir G.]. Aug. 25, 1952 [Aug. 25, 1951], No. 20066/51. Class 122 (5). [Also in Group XXXIV] A high-speed compressor and turbine unit has rotors 10, 11 mounted upon end portions of a shaft 14 provided with ball-bearings 23, 24 lubricated by means involving screw-threads 31, 32 of opposite hand (see Group XXXIV) and means are provided for preventing oil fed through the bearings from passing radially outwards along the backs of the rotors. Each of the rotors has a sleeve 40 with a radial flange 40a which has two inwardly-projecting flanges 41, 42. These flanges are circumferentially grooved and are a close fit against surfaces of the casing or of bushes fixed thereto. The arrangement is such that as the shaft 14 rotates a flow of air passes from the periphery of each rotor back along the grooved surfaces to an annular space 49 and eventually to atmosphere along channels 50, thereby preventing oil flow in the opposite direction from each bearing. The part of the shaft between the screw-threads 31, 32 is circumferentially grooved at 39 to prevent oil passing directly between channels 29, 30.
