Abstract

578,765. Bearings. HALFORD, F. B. Sept. 9, 1942, No. 12700. [Class 12 (i)] An antifriction bearing D, D' mounted on a sleeve B carried by a rotating shaft A has on each side a safety bearing surface E', F<2> engaging the sleeve B and carried by the stationary support G. Surface E<2> is formed on a sleeve E which is secured to the support G together with a housing F. This housing carries the surface F<2> and may have another bearing surface F', all the bearing surfaces being formed by lead-bronze facings or steel linings. The outer race D' of the antifriction bearing is carried by a member H secured in place by the housing F and preventing the bearing from tilting. Cooling air admitted at G' flows by grooves G<1>, G<2> to issue from the end of the bearing or by holes E<5>, F<7>, B' and annular passages F', F<5> to the annular space B' to issue at C<1>. Lubricant admitted at G<4> passes through holes E<6> to annular spaces H<2>, J and thence through the bearing to escape holes in the sleeve and casing. In the embodiment shown, the driving shaft A has a flange A<1> connected to the turbine rotor whilst the sleeve B transmits power to the impeller of a compressor.
