Abstract
786,629. Sewing machines. SINGER MANUFACTURING CO. Nov. 25, 1955 [Dec. 2, 1954], No. 33815/55. Class 112 [Also in Group XXIV] In a friction clutch which connects the handwheel 26 to the main shaft 18 of a sewing machine, a clamp washer 49 is formed on its front face with three lugs 61 and on its rear face with three lugs 71, the outer faces of the lugs providing clutch surfaces, and the lugs being equally spaced around the washer, whereby the latter flexes when clamping pressure is applied thereto. The handwheel is journalled on a sleeve 24 fixed to the end of shaft 18 by means of a cotter 31. A gear 27 secured to the handwheel meshes with a worm 22 carried by the shaft 23 of a driving motor. The clamp washer is slidably keyed to the sleeve by means of tongues 58 which projejct inwardly from the washer into notches 37 formed in the end face 34 of the sleeve. A clamping screw 51 has a shank 52 which screws into the bore 36 of the sleeve, whereby tightening of the screw forces lugs 71 against an annular face 48 on the handwheel, and lugs 61 against an annular face 54 on the screw to couple the handwheel to the shaft. A removable stop pin 56 on the screw is adapted to co-operate with stop lugs 63 provided on the front face of the washer. In a modification the handwheel is belt-driven.
