681,499. Sewing-machines. JONES SEWING MACHINE CO., Ltd., JEFFERSON, S., and GRIFFITHS, F. July 16, 1951 [Sept. 9, 1950], No. 22254/50. Class 112. Hand-gearing. A machine with a belt pulley 1 and driving handle 26 has gear-wheels 9, 25 on a sleeve 5 on the top shaft 6 and on a sliding shaft 14 respectively, the latter shaft being adapted to be driven by the handle and to engage and disengage the gears by its sliding. In the form shown, the sliding shaft 14 has an enlarged outer end 27 into which the handle 26 can be screwed, a catch 29 being arranged to engage the end face of the part 27 of a groove 32 therein to hold the shaft in the required position. The sleeve 5 is free on the shaft 6 and is locked thereto by a spring catch 10 when required.
