Class 8(1) In a shortened diffuser for sub-critical flow, a wholly or partially perforated shield 1 is provided inside the diffuser channel at a distance from the wall 3 of the diffuser, the peripheral portion 2 of the shield being so curved with relation to the surrounding diffuser wall 3 so as to form between itself and the wall an annular passage 4 the cross-sectional area of which increases in the direction of flow through the diffuser. The shield is shaped as a spherical cup and is placed at the locus 5 of the inflection points of the paths of flow of the particles of the medium.
