Abstract

771,254. Stuffing-box substitutes. CARRIER ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. Nov. 2, 1954 [Nov. 2, 1953], No. 31725/54. Class 122 (5). A fluid seal for a rotatable shaft 12 comprises a resilient sleeve 26 having a constricted portion 28 held in sealing contact with the shaft by a constricted portion 42 of a shell 34 and integrally connected by an intermediate portion 32 with an enlarged end portion 30 engaging a rotatable sealing ring 46 and embraced therewith by a collar 50 drivingly connected to the shell 34 by means permitting relative axial movement between the collar and shell, e.g. by lugs 43 on the end of the shell engaging axial slots 60 in the collar. The shell 34 has a shoulder 40 forming a support for one end of the sleeve 26 and terminates at its end remote from the sleeve in a flange 36 adapted to abut a shoulder 66 on the shaft. Axial grooves 54 on the periphery of the ring 46 are engaged by indentations 52 on the collar 50 which is shouldered at 56 to press a washer 58 against the portion 30 of the sleeve 26. The rotatable sealing ring 46 is urged into facial contact with a sealing surface 22 on a cover-plate 20 secured to shaft housing 10, by a spring 44 compressed between the flange 36 and the collar 50. To assemble the seal on the shaft the collar 50 may be initially rotated relative to the shell 34 so that the lugs 43 do not register with the slots 60 and then, with the inner edge 62 of the collar abutting the lugs, the seal is pushed along the shaft until the flange 36 abuts the shoulder 66 on the shaft; the collar then being rotated until the lugs register with the slots and the collar abuts the spring 44. The cover-plate 20 is finally assembled on the shaft housing 10, compressing the spring 44 so that the lugs 43 occupy a position intermediate the slots 60. If desired, the seal may be inserted on the shaft with the lugs and slots in register and rotation of the collar to cause the lugs and slots to be out of register deferred until resistance to movement of the seal along the shaft causes compression of the spring 44.
