Abstract

773,663. Stuffing-box substitutes. GARLOCK PACKING CO. Nov. 22, 1955 [Dec. 7, 1954], No. 33441/55. Class 122 (5). In a rubbing collar type seal in which a rubber &c. bellows 28 sealed at one end to one of the relatively rotating parts carries at its other end a rigid sealing ring 26 urged by a spring 30 into rubbing contact with a radial surface 58 on the other part, the bellows surrounds the outer periphery of the ring 26, has a radial flange 48 engaging an end face of the ring remote from the spring 30 and is secured to the sealing ring by a surrounding L-section clamping ring 70 whose radial flange 74 abuts the radial flange 48 of the bellows. An annular bead 46 on the sealing ring engages a groove 50 in the bellows or, alternatively, if such a groove is not provided, embeds itself in the bellows material. The spring 30 is compressed between the sealing ring 26 and a radial flange 38 of the bellows abutting and, preferably, cemented to the bottom of a metal shell 18 press-fitted in a recess in a pump impeller 16 and having an inner cylindrical portion 22 provided with an axial projection 66 engaging an axial slot 68 in the sealing ring 26. The surface 58 is formed on a sealing ring 26. The surface 58 is formed on a sealing ring 60 resiliently mounted on a packing- ring 62 in a recess 64 in the pump casing 14.
