724,948. Stuffing-box substitutes. PERFECTING SERVICE CO. Feb. 26, 1953, No. 5378/53. Class 122 (5). [Also in Group XXVIII] In a joint between a stationary housing 21 and a pipe 30 connected, for instance, to a rotary drum, the pipe rotates in a bearing 40, and a sleeve 50 slidably keyed to the pipe is spring pressed towards the bearing so that an end face of the sleeve is in sealing contact with an end face of the bearing. As shown, a key 52 fitted in the sleeve 50 engages a slot 53 in the pipe, spring pressure is provided by a truncated washer 55 held in position by a clip 36, and the bearing comprises a metal sleeve 40a bonded to a sleeve 40b of metal impregnated with graphite- and is fixed to the housing 20 by a ring 66 secured by screws 68. The sleeve 50 may have a groove 60 to receive a rubber ring 61 providing an additional seal and permitting floating action of the sleeve.
