712,105. Coating with metals. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. May 5, 1952 [May 4, 1951]. No. 10467/51. Class 82 (2) [Also in Groups XV and XX] A facetted surface is formed on a backing by exposing the latter, through a stencil, to molecular vapours produced in a vacuum, the stencil being spaced from the backing and dimensioned relative to the source of the vapours so as to establish a penumbra, the thickness of the deposit tapering from a maximum outside the penumbra to a minimum within the umbra.. As shown metal 4 is evaporated in vacuo, the vapour passing through a stop 6 and a wire grid 7 to fall on a backing 1 so spaced from the grid 7 as to provide an umbra 8 receiving no vapour and a penumbra 9 receiving varying amounts of vapour so as to produce different thicknesses of metal upon the backing and thus give a facetted mirror surface 3. The mirror is intended particularly for use in the interferometer of Specification 712.092. [Group XX].
