Class 130 A narrow tobacco stream formed by showering tobacco on to a travelling surface and comparable in cross-sectional size with a cigarette rod so as to be suitable for forming into dense-end cigarettes is made uneven in density along its length, as it passes from a conveyer 3, Fig. 1, to a faster-moving conveyer 5 which may carry a cigarette paper web 4, by the action of spaced groups of accelerating fingers 8 on a wheel 7, the peripheral speed of which may be that of the conveyer 5. As shown, tobacco is delivered to the conveyer 3 by apparatus 1, for forming a tobacco filler, as disclosed in Specification 646,746, and two wheels 7, Fig. 2, rotating together side-by-side co-act with the stream as it passes over a bridge 6, against which it is pressed by piano wire or other resilient fingers 9 of the kind disclosed in. Specification 682,686. In machines for making cigarettes with dense tobacco portions at each end, the group spacing of the fingers 8 is such as to give denser tobacco portions at intervals of one cigarette length, the cigarettes being finally cut off through these portions. Where cigarettes with only one dense end are to be made, as mouthpieces cigarettes, the spacing is greater. Such mouthpiece cigarettes, having 'their dense ends adjacent the plugs, may be made from double-length cigarette rods according to the invention assembled with plugs in the manner described in Specification 430,742.
