Cigarette-making machines.-In means for spreading out tobacco, of the kind in which a fleece of tobacco is formed across a moving sieve band subjected to suction action, the release of the tobacco fleece from the band at the point of delivery is facilitated by a gradual reduction of the suction action obtained by tapering off the suction chamber or causing it to recede from the band. Fig. 2 shows a sieve band 5 passing over pulleys 34, 35, 36 and subjected to the action of a suction chamber 39, which is tapered to a point at 51 where the tobacco is delivered on to a band 19 leading to a grooved conveyer 23. The tobacco is fed from a hopper 1 and is straightened by an air jet 14 and reduced in thickness by a brush 16. In a modification, the tobacco passes over a sieve band formed as a rotary drum subjected to internal suction, which is reduced at the point of delivering by an internal segmental section tapering towards the periphery of the drum. In a third form, similar to that shown in Fig. 2, the lower side of the suction chamber 39 is inclined upwardly towards the delivery end.
