Abstract

697,344. Taking-up slack in flexible members. RUSHWORTH, D. April 10, 1952. [Jan. 12, 1951] No. 875/51. Addition to 635,402. Class 78 (ii). In apparatus for supplying electric or fluid power to a reciprocating or movable carriage, e.g. the excavator C, the power supply cable or hose D extending from a point A at the top of a mast B through a guide F at the top of a second mast G to a connector E on the carriage, passes round a'pulley H disposed between the two masts and attached to the end of a rope K wound on a self-winding reel L. The disposition of the masts and of the reel is such that the reel L pays out or takes in the rope K forming a bight in the cable or hose D so as to leave no slack cable over a range of working positions of the excavator C. The rope K may pass from the reel L to the pulley H over a second pulley disposed on the ground. The cable or hose D may be attached to the point A and to the connector E by resilient means comprising, for example, springs O attached at one end to the mast A and at the other to a sleeve N secured on the cable, the cable being left slack between the sleeve N and the point A.
