Abstract
681,964. Balancing-apparatus; taking up slack of flexible conductors. McCAFFREYRUDDOCK. TAGLINE CORPORATION. Feb. 23, 1951. No. 4443/51. Class 78 (ii). A spring-driven reel for maintaining a flexible member under substantially constant tension is constructed so that the spring may be installed and removed without disturbing the winding drum. The spring 16 is housed between cylindrical members 6, 9 at the side of the drum 15, the former of which is secured to a derrick boom, crane frame, &c. and the latter of which is rotatably mounted on members 10, 11 secured in the member 6. The drum 15 is carried by a shaft 12 which passes through the member 10 and is secured to the member 9. The end of the member 6 remote from the drum is closed by a threaded plug 27 which has an inwardly extending shaft 28. A member 22 rotatably mounted on this shaft has an extension 24 of square cross-section on which is slidably mounted a bushing 25 secured in the end of the member 9. The member 22 has a lug 23, Fig. 4, for engaging one end of the spring 16. The other end of the, spring is engaged by similar lug 20 on the member 10. In order to remove a spring, the drum is first turned to free the spring from tension and to disconnect it from the lug 20. The plug 27 is then removed and after the member 22 has been taken out, the spring can be withdrawn. The section 35 of the drum receives the flexible member L, which may be a tag line, and the section 36 is used for a cable C for supplying power to a lifting magnet as described in Specification 632,389. The cable C is connected to the power leads 38 through a slip ring structure 37.
