Abstract

689,923. Magnetic bearings. BAERMANN, M. Sept. 19, 1950 [Sept. 19, 1949], No. 22984/50. Class 12 (i). A magnetic bearing comprises circular permanent magnet bodies arranged directly opposite one another with their respective like poles adjacent, and are so magnetized that an annular radial symmetrical magnetic field is produced. Axially magnetized annular magnets 8, 11, Fig. 2, are secured to a shaft 7, and co-operate with axially magnetized annular magnets 9, 10 to form radial bearings. A radially magnetized annular magnet 12 secured to the shaft 7 cooperates with a similar fixed magnet 14 forming an axial thrust bearing. In a modification, concentric axially magnetized magnets 24, 25, Fig. 3, mounted on a carrier 23 co-operate with similar magnets 20, 22 on a part 19 mounted in a housing 18. A double row of such bearings mounted on a single carrier may be used. In a further modification, annular magnets 35 ... 37, Fig. 5, are mounted side-by-side on a stepped shaft 38 and co-operate with annular magnets 39 ... 41 mounted in a stepped housing 42.
