Abstract
753,127. Magnetic bearings. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Dec. 17, 1954 [Dec. 23, 1953], Neo. 36624/54. Class 12 (1). [Also in Group XX] In a turn-sensitive gyroscope (see Group XX), the rotor assembly is buoyed by a non-viscous liquid and is journalled in magnetic bearings. As shown in Fig. 1, an annular magnet 32 is mounted on the journal 5 of the rotor casing 2. Two more annular magnets 33, 34 are mounted on the inside of a liquid-filled outer housing 1, to lie with small clearance on opposite sides of magnet 32 which attracts both magnets 33, 34 to support the journal. A prolongation of journal 5, resting on an end-plate 8, and a similar arrangement on the other journal (not shown) prevent axial movement. In a modification, Fig. 4, an annular magnet 72 mounted on the journal 5 lies between annular magnets 71, 73 fixed to the housing. The magnets are magnetized axially in the same direction. The journal also has an emergency bearing 60 of conventional character, and axial movement is prevented by end-plates as before. Specification 740,796, [Group XX], is referred to.
