686,716. Washing vehicles. EMANUEL, R. Oct. 20, 1950 [Oct. 22, 1949], No. 25653/50. Class 138 (i). [Also in Group XXIX] A motor vehicle washing plant comprises a washing tunnel into which the vehicle may be introduced and spray nozzles arranged in the tunnel and fed with water under pressure, which nozzles are carried by tubular annuli rotatably mounted in the tunnel. In one embodiment, Figs. 1 and 3, the vehicle washer comprises a fixed tunnel 1 provided with a fixed U- section guide 2 and fixed metal guide plate 3 along which a vehicle A may be moved by a chain conveyer 4 connected to a part of the vehicle frame. Above the vehicle a rotatable hub 15 is supported in the top of the tunnel and water is supplied to the hub and through radial conduits 17 to a tubular annulus 18 having jet openings 18a, which jets cause the annulus to rotate by reaction. A similar annulus 23 is provided on one or both side walls of the tunnel, while another annulus 10 is provided in the bottom of the tunnel below the guides 2, 3. The radial conduits 9 of the annulus 10 are provided with vertical pipes 12 having jets 13. In a second embodiment, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), the vehicle remains stationary in the tunnel and a spray annulus is movable along each interior side wall of the tunnel. In this case the annulus hub is connected to a slide movable along the wall through the agency of a nut and screw mechanism, the screw of which can be driven manually through gearing or by a motor through belt and pulleys. In a third embodiment, Figs. 6 to 8 (not shown), the tunnel having annuli in its sides and bottom is moved by an endless belt over the vehicle which is stationary. The hubs of the side annuli are supported in the tunnel side walls while the bottom annulus hub is connected to a curved metal tube connected at its other end to the tunnel. The curved tube is also supported by rollers which run in a fixed guide under the vehicle. Although in all the above embodiments the annuli are rotated by jet reaction they may be rotated by mechanical means. The tunnel of the last embodiment may be replaced by a frame comprising two side walls connected together and movable with respect to the vehicle, each side wall carrying a rotatable annulus.
