Abstract

A plurality of artificial threads are wettreated while moving parallel to and at a short distance from each other in a substantially horizontal plane, the threads being led under a liquid surface which is transported in the same <PICT:0758671/IV(a)/1> direction as the threads by means of a conveying device placed underneath the layer. In one device, not shown, the threads are led in a horizontal plane beneath a pair of rollers through a layer of liquid carried by an endless belt having a channel section. The liquid is directed on to the endless belt through a slit orifice extending over the whole width of the belt. A trough having means for removing the liquid may be placed about the belt. The vertical position of the thread guide rollers and endless belt may be adjustable. In a modification, Fig. 2, the endless belt 2 is supported beneath the surface of the liquid in a trough 1 by rollers 3 mounted on a pair of hollow buoyant members 18. The threads 10 are conveyed beneath the surface of the liquid in a horizontal plane over guiding rollers 11 and 12 which are constructed as swingable rollers with the rollers 14 and 15 respectively, the pairs of rollers 11, 14 and 12, 15 being pivoted at 13 and 13. Spacers are provided for adjustment of the position of the endless belt relative to the rollers 11 and 12. Liquid is admitted to the trough at 16 and removed at 8, the height of the liquid surface being determined by a height-adjustable gate 17. The upper surface of the endless belt moves in the same direction as the threads at or near the same speed and so conveys a layer of liquid with the threads. Instead of an endless belt, parallel chains with attached plates may be used. The belt may be driven through a flexible shaft from outside the trough or by a built-in hydraulic or pneumatic motor or one of the rollers 3 may be constructed as an electric motor of which the shaft is stationary and the housing rotates.
