Abstract

862,336. Earth-digging apparatus. HEWITT-ROBINS Inc. Jan. 5, 1959 [May 1, 1958], No. 380/59. Class 68(1). [Also in Group XXX] A device for reclaiming material from a storage pile 13 comprises a bucket wheel 40 and a harrow 15 mounted on a carriage 14 movable, as the wheel rotates, across the face of the pile on a wheeled frame 10 running on rails 12, the bucket wheel feeding an endless conveyer 67 on the frame 10 through a hopper 65, Fig. 4 and the conveyer 67 feeding a fixed endless conveyer 70, Fig. 1. The framework 24 of the carriage 14 surrounding the framework 22 of the frame 10 is guided by rollers 25, Fig. 4, and guides 26, and is moved along the frame 10 by means of motor driven sprockets 32 and idler sprockets 32a engaging chains 33 secured to both ends of the frame 10. The bucket wheel 40 is supported on flanged wheels 44 and is rotated by means of driven sprockets 57 engaging rollers 58 spaced round the wheel. For reclaiming at a uniform rate, the bucket wheel is rotated at a constant speed while the speed of the carriage 14 along the frame 10 is regulated automatically so that it is greater towards the outer portions of the pile face and less in the central portion. More than one carriage 14 and bucket wheel may be employed on the same frame 10.
