Abstract
683,851. Exhaust manifolds. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Nov. 7, 1950 [Nov. 9, 1949], No. 27138/50. Class 7 (ii). In an exhaust manifold for internal - combustion engines there are provided openings 17 corresponding to the exhaust ports in the engine and indentations 20, 21 forming abutment surfaces by which the manifold is clamped to the engine; the manifold may be tubular. The side 14 of the cylinder head 3 is recessed 15 to accommodate the inner wall 16 of the manifold 10 which recess extends the full length of the head 3 and is in line with the exhaust ports 7. Adjacent each opening 17 are the indentations 20, 21 that form abutment surfaces 22 for lugs 23 which hold the manifold 10 against the recess 15; the lugs 23 are of L-section and contact the manifold 10 near its coolest part. Flat washers may replace the lugs in which case the cylinder head is provided with inclined abutment surfaces for the washers in order to simulate the leverage effect obtained when using the lugs. The washers may each be elongated and secured to the head by two bolts. Where two bolts are used at each port they are arranged diagonally and where four bolts are provided they are located at the corners of a rectangle.
