670,749. Motor vehicle driving gear. MORRIS MOTORS, Ltd., and ISSIGONIS, A. A. Oct. 20, 1950. [Aug. 23, 1949], No. 21827/49. Class 79 (ii). In a motor vehicle having a transverse engine and gearbox through which a differential and swinging axle shafts are driven, the transmission is so arranged that wher in top gear, with the gearbox mainshaft rotating at the same speed as the engine shaft, there is only a single gear reduction between such mainshaft and the road wheels. As shown, the longitudinal frame members 5 carry transversely an engine 1 and gearbox 2 with which is integral a differential casing 4. Drive is transmitted when in top gear from the gearbox mainshaft 12 and pinion 13 to the crown wheel 14 of the differential 3, thence via swing- ing axles 9 to the road wheels, which are carried by lower suspension arms 6 of independently sprung wheels. The arrangement may be applied to front steerable wheels, or to rear wheels.
