Abstract

113,653. Millington, T. H. Feb. 27, 1917. Transmission gear of invariable ratio; driving steering-wheels; balance or differential gearing.-The front wheels of a motor-vehicle are driven by two transmission shafts which are themselves driven from a differential gear on a central longitudinal driving-shaft, the several shafts being all arranged in the plane of the wheel axles. The engine 5 drives a shaft 6 driving an alined shaft 7 through a speed gear in a box 3. The shaft 7 carries a spider 9, on which turn bevel or other wheels 10 differentially driving wheels 11, 12, driving a sleeve 13 and a shaft 14 geared to the rear axle differential, respectively. The sleeve 13 carries a further spider 16 differentially driving wheels 19, 20 geared to wheels 26, 27 on shafts 32, which are parallel to the shafts 6, 7 and drive the front wheels. All the shafts are arranged in the plane of the front and rear axles. The second differential on the shaft 7 may be dispensed with, the wheels 11, 12 being geared directly to the shafts 32.
