Abstract

759,760. Motor vehicles. LEYLAND MOTORS, Ltd. June 17, 1954 [March 17, 1953], No. 7359/53. Classes 79 (2), 79 (3) and 79 (4). In a low-floored vehicle, a rear transversely set engine drives, through a friction clutch or hydraulic coupling, a change-speed gear whose axis is directed forwardly toward a point below the wheel axles close to a rear wheel, and the gear-box drives a differential gear, below the level of the axles, from which the rear wheels are driven through transverse shafts and reduction gears. As shown in Fig. 2 a casing 4 is connected to the engine 1 and encloses bevel gearing 5, 6, the driven gear 6 being associated with a change-speed gear, the casing 7 of which is secured to the casing 4. The axis of the change-speed gear makes a horizontal angle of about 76 degrees and a vertical angle of 9 degrees with the engine axis. The output shaft 8 of the gear slopes downwardly and is universally jointed to the input shaft of a differential gear 9 which is connected by a stub shaft 11 and reduction gearing 12, 13 to the off-side wheel and by a shaft 14 and reduction gearing 15, 16 to the near side wheel, the shaft 14 being enclosed in an eccentric tube 17.
