Abstract
657,389. Air compressors. NEW YORK AIR BRAKE CO. Feb. 21, 1949, No. 4700. Convention date, March 8, 1948. [Class 8(i)] [Also in Group XXIX] A gas-cushion accumulator 27 is provided in a hydraulic pump 3 and motor 36 circuit, the pressure in which circuit is kept within upper and lower limits by loading and byepassing the pump through an automatic valve 5 (see Group XXIX). A shouldered bore 37 in one end of the accumulator has an air inlet valve 38 and a discharge valve 39 leading into the gascushion space 32, the latter being separated from the liquid space 31 by a piston 29. A plunger 41 is housed in bore 37 and is loaded by a spring 42, located between an outer plunger flange 40 and the bore shoulder, whilst a branch of a pump outlet conduit 4 opens into the enlarged part of the bore so that each time the pump is loaded the plunger makes a displacement stroke to maintain the pressure in space 32 and each time the pump is byepassed, the plunger 41 makes a suction stroke. Any excess fluid from space 32 is vented by relief valve 44 which is connected by conduit 45 to hydraulic exhaust line 34 so, that any liquid in the fluid is returned to the reservoir 1. In a modification, a differential piston is used, the flange 40 being enlarged to act as a piston in the enlarged part of the bore.
