Abstract

640,505. Two-stroke engines. RIISE, S.S. July 18, 1946, No. 21561. Convention date, June 23, 1945. [Classes 7(ii) and 7(vi)] In a two-stroke engine exhaust from the cylinder takes place in two stages, high pressure exhaust first passing to atmosphere through non-return means either directly or through a turbine, and low pressure exhaust subsequently passing to a receiver having a capacity 1.5 that of the cylinder and subject to the continuous suction of a pump driven by an exhaustactuated turbine, the engine crank-shaft or a separate source of power. Charge is thus drawn into the cylinder, the arrangement being such that the amount of charge flowing into the cylinder causes the pressure therein to rise to at least atmospheric pressure. As shown, high pressure exhaust passes through a passage 8 from a cylinder 5 when the exhaust valve 6 is lifted and subsequently a sleeve valve 7 attached to the valve uncovers a low pressure passage 9. Alternatively passages below the piston crown register with ports in the cylinder walls. The high pressure exhaust passage is dimensioned so that its resistance prevents air from escaping during the compression stroke. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also an ejector through which the high pressure exhaust passes to produce suction in the receiver. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
