Abstract

589,094. Four-stroke engines. TIEN, H-Y. Feb. 9, 1945, No. 3347. [Class 7 (ii)] In a four-stroke engine the piston head comprises an outer shell 2 having two sets of vents 5, 6 for air admitted to form an air cushion between it and an inner core 1 connected to the crank, the arrangement being such that the expansion and exhaust strokes are longer than the suction stroke. The charge is drawn through a poppet valve of the cylinder head during the suction stroke until vents 6 are uncovered by ports 7 in the cylinder wall, when air is drawn into the space between the shell 2 and the core 1. This air is forced out again during the compression stroke but a small amount trapped beyond the vents 6 does not escape until near the end of the expansion stroke when the ports 5 are uncovered by the cylinder ports 7.
