Abstract

289,160. Grace, L. G. Jan. 22, 1927. Four-stroke-cycle engines; pumps. - A piston valve 13, which also serves as a pump for the combustible mixture, controls admission, supercharging, exhaust, and scavenging for the working cylinder 11, and also the inlet to the pump or valve chamber 10; or the scavenging may be omitted. The valve is formed with a passage 41 which controls admission to the cylinder 11 by way of ports 35, 30. 33, and exhaust therefrom through a second cylinder port (not shown) and port 36; or there may be two passages through the valve and a single cylinder port. Inlet to the pump chamber at the upper end of the valve casing 10 occurs during the down-stroke of the valve through passages 35, 40 and valve ports 45, 46 leading to a longitudinal passage 44 through the valve. Towards the end of the exhaust stroke, a part of the compressed mixture passes by way of the passage 44, extension 51 of the valve port 45, and passage 32, into the cylinder 11 for scavenging. Similarly, towards the end of the suction stroke, the remainder of the compressed mixture passes through passage 44, ports 46, 37, and passage 32, into the cylinder 11 for supercharging. The passage 40, instead of leading to the mixture inlet 35 as shown, may be connected to an air supply, in order that the valve may compress air for scavenging and supercharging; or both air and mixture supplies may be provided, a handactuated valve being fitted for changing over from one to the other. Driving-gear.-The valve or pump piston 13 is preferably given a combined oscillating and reciprocating movement from an inclined crank 15 as described in Specification 249,115, [Class 7 (vi), Internal-combustion engines, Valves &c. for].
