Abstract
636,848. Centrifugal pumps. HALL, S. Z. May 19, 1948, No. 13526. [Class 110(i)] A self-priming centrifugal pump has a chamber J, which is filled with water for starting. The inlet pipe traverses this chamber and ends in a sliding cone-piece E which enters a coned entry piece C2 on the pump. At rest, the non-return valve O1 is closed on its seating 02 and the cone-piece E is in the position shown. When the impeller is rotated, the circulating water re-enters the pump between the coned pieces E, C2 and entrains air from the suction pipe. When the air is exhausted and water lifted, the delivery pressure in the chamber J acts upon a piston E2 and closes the piece E, as a valve, on to the piece C2. The piston E2 can be replaced by a diaphragm, or the sliding cone-piece E may be operated by hand. The impeller blades are formed, as shown, for one blade in Fig. 4, with a thickened leaving edge cut with saw-tooth serrations S.
