Abstract
525,278. Centrifugal pumps. STRATTON, A. C. Feb. 16, 1939, No. 5182. [Class 110 (i)] The inlet 11 of a self-priming pump is guarded by a non-return valve 13 and the volute 18 discharges into a chamber 21. The volute wall is cut by a slot 22 which is in line with the clearance 23 at the side of the impeller 15. When the impeller is full of water, water is discharged in the ordinary way through the volute. When air enters in the impeller, the delivery pressure of the impeller falls and water returns from the chamber 21 through the slot 22. This water is broken by the impeller into a spray which entrains air and is re-discharged through the volute. Portions of the impeller blades may lie close to the wall 25 so as to increase the fineness of the spray. The slot may be replaced by ports.
