Abstract

691,425. Centrifugal pumps. SIEMEN, O., and HINSCH, J. Feb. 7, 1951 [June 3, 1950], No. 3037/51. Class 110(i) In a liquid-ring air pump having two series-connected stages of different displacements, so much liquid is drawn from the second stage 2 through an auxiliary port 7 that it is put out of action when the pump is working at low vacuum, so that only the first stage 1 is operative. The air enters the pump through a port 3 and leaves it through a port 6, being transferred from stage 1 to stage 2 through ports 4 and 5. When the pump is working at high vacuum, sufficient liquid passes from stage 1 to stage 2 compared with the amount passing out through the port 7 to maintain the liquid ring of stage 2. The flow through port 7 may be adjusted by a throttling valve. Port 7 may be situated at the periphery of the casing 10. The two stages may be arranged in series around the periphery of a common impeller. It is stated to be known to provide by-pass valves whereby the second stage is partially by-passed when the pump is working at low vacuum.
