Abstract

600,123. Variable-speed chain gearing. LANG, R. Sept. 27, 1945, No. 25136. [Class 80 (ii)] In a variable-speed gear for cycles of the kind in which the chain E is shifted laterally on to different sized sprockets F, G, H on the driven hub by axial movement of a jockeysprocket K, the latter is mounted on a non-rotatable sleeve 16 having a pin and helical:slot connection 20, 21 with a spindle 14 which is rotated to adjust the jockey-sprocket axially and is carried in a sleeve 10 adjustably screwed in a two-piece adjustable bracket L. The bracket L is pivoted on a fixed bracket 1 clamped to the rear wheel spindle by its nut 2, and is loaded by a spring 3, 4 to tension the chain E. A chain guide 23 is secured to the sleeve 16 by cones 18 and a lip 23<1>, rotary movement of the guide 23 and therefore of the sleeve 16 being. prevented by a pin 24 secured to the bracket L. Operation of cables M secured to a pulley 15 causes rotation of spindle 14 and thus lateral movement of sprocket K to shift chain E on the nested sprockets F,G,H.
