Abstract

501,323. Rotary compressors. BECKER, O. May 26, 1938, No. 16799. Convention date, May 26, 1937. (Class 110 (ii)] An air compressor has thin steel vanes 14 (approximately À3 to À5 mm.) fitted in slots in a rotor built up of segments 12 of light metal, and held together at the ends by rings 13 which are shrunk into position. The slots arc each formed in one face of a segment before the rotor is assembled. The driving shaft 30 extends through the hollow rotor and is shaped as a polygon at the end (left hand in Fig. 1) where it makes contact with the rotor., Driving means is keyed on to a part 31 of the shaft. The latter is reduced in diameter between the ends, and designed to fracture when a speed equal to 1¢ times the normal allowable speed is reached. The casing of light metal comprises inner and outer walls 4, 5, separated by ribs 6 into cooling chambers. A cast-iron liner 7 is provided. Inlet and outlet ports connect with slots 10, 11, respectively. The rotor extends as stub axles 22, 23, supported on bearings 24, 25. The covers 17, 18, are secured by studs 20 and nuts 21. The bearing 25 is fixed by a nut 26 on the shaft, but the outer ring of bearing 24 is allowed slight axial freedom to allow for expansion due to heating. Two discs 29 prevent oil being thrown 'outwards along the shaft. A lubricating pump 32 is driven by a tongue and groove coupling.34 and supplies oil to a nozzle 36. The pump may be supported by a flange 18, or by tensioning bands around the wall 4.
