669,732. Gas turbines; centrifugal blowers. BUCHI, A. Jan. 14, 1947. [Jan. 21, 1946] No. 1226/47. Classes 110(i) and 110(iii). [Also in Group XXXIV] A turbo blower-rotor aggregate with separate and distinct turbine and impeller rotors each in its own housing and with the rotor aggregate mounted on a stationary axle extending into the rotor aggregate has the journal bearing at the turbine side of the stationary axle modified to act also as a thrust bearing serving to locate the rotor aggregate in both axial directions. This bearing is disposed at the centre of gravity of the aggregate. The gas-turbine rotor 2, Fig. 2, is mounted on a rotary sleeve 10 and carries the blower impeller 1. The sleeve 10 has bearings 13, 14 on a stub shaft 8 which is hollow and carries a hollow spindle 19 which may be used for discharging cooling fluid from chamber 22 at the turbine rotor centre. Bearing 14 is stepped to provide a thrust shoulder 15, and a thrust member 17 is secured to spindle 19. Lubricant supplied to the annular space between spindle 19 and stub shaft 8 reaches the bearings and space 22 and returns through the bearings to oilthrower 24, for discharge to run-off chamber 26<SP>1</SP>, pressure air being supplied by pipe 25 to the thrower to prevent oil reaching the blower. The blower 1 may be keyed direct on to sleeve 10 and the turbine rotor 2 secured to the sleeve by a detachable connection. In a vertical installation, Fig. 5, sleeve 10 has a cap 42 with a boss or lug 43 centred in the hub 23 of turbine rotor 2 which is welded to a sleeve 41. The returning oil discharges through a bore 45 in fixed shaft 8 and through additional bores 46 located prior to the oil flinger 24. The fixed stub shaft and the rotary sleeve 10 may be made entirely of bearing metal.
