Abstract
513,849. Centrifugal pumps. MASCHINENFABRIK AUGSBURG-NURNBERG AKT.-GES. March 22, 1938, No. 8770. Convention date. March 23, 1937. [Class 110 (i)] In an exhaust gas driven turbo-blower. spaced bearings 4, 5 are used to separate the revolving hollow shaft 6 carrying the turbine wheel 7 and the stationary shaft 3 secured in the blower housing 1. The ball races of the bearing 5 are rigidly secured to the shafts 3 and 6 so as to locate the rotor whilst the outer race of the bearing 4 permits linear movement of the shaft 6 due to heat expansion. The bearing 5 is so arranged that no bending stresses are applied to the shaft 6 by the blower wheel 20. The shaft 3 is kept cool by means of passages 8, 9, 10, 11 through which cooling fluid passes and by means of plates 12, 13 which prevent radiant heat from the wheel 7 reaching it. If desired, the outer race of the bearing 4 may also be mounted in a bush of non-conducting material. The shaft 6 is prevented from overheating by water injected on to it by the pipe 14. Baffle rings 18 and air lock chambers 19 prevent the water creeping along the shaft. The bearings 4, 5 are lubricated and cooled by oil laden compressed air passed through the passages 21, 22.
