Abstract

537.908. Variable-speed gearing. LAGONDA MOTORS, Ltd., and SEWELL, C. W. May 17, 1940, No. 8802. [Class 80 (ii)] In variable-speed gearing in which an electromagnetic clutch synchronizes positive clutch elements when changing speed, a clutch actuating member has a lost-motion connection with the positive clutch so that the electromagnetic clutch will be actuated before the positive clutch The variable-speed gearing and the switch mechanism may be of the kinds disclosed in Specifications 524,982 and 534,748 respectively. As shown, an actuating rod 11 has an arm 12 engaging a member 14 fixed to a rod 15 and having a tail 21 engaged between the limbs 22 of a forked member 23. The latter is rotatively free and axially secured to the rod 15. The member 23 has a ball end 24 engageable with selector forks 25, 26, 27. Springs 28 are arranged between the tail 21 and the limbs 22, the amount of play between the parts being controllable by screws 29. Fixed to the rod 15 is a member 16 for three switch mechanisms 17, 18, 19. Rotary movement of the rod 11 will set the member 16 in position relatively to the switch mechanisms 17, 18, 19 and engage the ball 24 with one of the forks 25, 26, 27. Upon axial movement of the rod 11 one of the switch mechanisms will be actuated to energize a synchronizing, clutch and when the play between the parts 21, 22 has been taken up the appropriate selector rod will be moved to actuate a positive clutch.
