Abstract

530.310. Actuating change speed gear. MARCHANT, W. D., and PRESTWICH, E. S. April 26, 1939, No. 12537. [Class 80 (ii)] In a change speed gear a one-piece gear shift lever 11 is freely mounted on the gear change shaft 1, and upon movement is coupled uni-directionally thereto, and is afterwards returned to its initial position. As shown, the lever 11 is mounted on a bush 12 on the end of the gear change shaft 1. The lever has a pin 14 engaging a cam slot 15 in the bush 12, and ratchet teeth 7a, 8a, opposed to ratchet teeth 7, 8, on discs 4, 5, fixed to the shaft 1. A pin 16 fixed to the bush 12 passes through a slot 17 in the lever 11 and is engaged by a pair of compression springs 18. Upon a turning movement' being given to the lever 11 the pin 14 moves in the slot 15 and the lever moves axially to engage the teeth 7, 7a, or 8. 8a, and operate the gear change shaft 1. Upon release of the lever 11 the ratchet teeth disengage and the lever 11 is returned to the initial position by the springs 18. Instead of the pin and slot connection 14, 15, the lever 11 may be screw threaded to the bush 2, and the ratchet clutches may be replaced by cone clutches.
