Abstract

738,471. Change-speed gearing. WEYMANN, C. T. Oct. 30, 1953 [Oct. 31, 1952; Oct. 27, 1953], No. 30054/53. Class 80 (2). Electromagnetic or electrically - operated change-speed gearing is automatically controlled by a number of two-way centrifugallyoperated switches 1, 2, ..., Fig. 1, one less than the number of forward speeds, mounted on a member 8 rotating with the output shaft of the gear. At low speed, the movable contacts m of the switches are in the position shown, the circuit connections being such that the electromagnet 11 for first speed is energized. As the speed rises, contact m of switch 1 moves into its other position at a first predetermined speed to de-energize magnet 1<SP>1</SP> and energize magnet 21 for second speed; then, at a second predetermined speed, contact m of switch 2 moves into its other position to de-energize magnet 2<SP>1</SP> and energize magnet 3<SP>1</SP> for third speed, and so on. The movable contact m of each switch is controlled through a plunger 9 by a centrifugally-acting spring blade 10, which may be loaded by a weight and may have an adjusting screw. The gear may be controlled manually when required by a rotary contact arm 12 co-operating with contacts I, II, III... for the forward speeds, contact R for reverse, contact O for neutral, and contact 13 for the automatic control. Where, as in epicyclic gearing, two magnets are to be energized for each speed, the arm 12 is a double one and additional contacts are provided, or the contact m of each centrifugal switch may, in each of its two positions, co-operate with a pair of contacts. The blade spring 10 of each switch may have a lost-motion connection 42, 43, Fig. 7, with its contact m, so that the speed for each upward gear change is higher than that for downward change. In Fig. 9, two sets of centrifugal switches are provided, operating at different speeds, and one or other set is selectively brought into circuit by a two-way switch 63, which may be controlled manually or by depression of the accelerator pedal beyond a certain position.
