Abstract

524,598. Variable-speed friction gearing. BEIER. J. Feb. 1, 1939, No. 3453. Convention date, Feb. 1, 1938. [Class 80 (ii)] Variable-speed friction-gearing comprises conically-faced discs b axially slidable on a shaft a and two or more sets of discs c slidable on shafts d, the distance of which from the central shaft a may be adjusted to vary the transmission ratio. The shafts d may be journalled in pivoted frames f, the different frames being linked together for control by a lever k. Springs g, g<1> press the discs together, and a governor h may be provided to supplement the spring action. The surfaces of the discs may be curved, and curved bearing surfaces in the shafts are provided to permit ready alignment of the discs. From the shafts d motion is transmitted through spur-gearing l, m to the drum n and shaft o. Epicyclic gearing may be interposed at one or both ends of the friction gear, the driving or driven shaft, or both, being secured to' the planet carrier. The gearing may be constructed as a " branched" gear, part of the power being transmitted, for example, through the outer wheel of a planet system and part through the sun wheel.
