Abstract

524,096. Steering road rollers. GREEN & SON, Ltd., T., KNIGHT, F. B., and OWEN, W. A. Jan. 21, 1939, No. 2177. [Class 79 (v)] The steering roll of a road roller is steered by a fluid-pressure ram and cylinder mechanism, either the cylinder or the ram being pivoted to the roller chassis on a vertical pivot parallel to the steering pivot of the roll. In the construction shown the steering roll 2 is mounted in a frame 29 connected by longitudinal pivots 30 to a steering fork 3 having a vertical pivot shaft 4 in the main frame 1. The fork 3 is steered by means of an arm 5 thereon connected by a rod 7 to a piston 9 working in a double-acting fluidpressure cylinder 8 connected by vertical pivots 16, 17 to cross beams 12, 13 of the main frame plates 14, 15. In the case shown of a Dieselengine roller oil is used in the cylinder 8 and is supplied to the cylinder by a pump unit U connected through a steering valve V and pipes 10, 11 to the cylinder. When a hand-wheel W is rotated in one direction or the other to control the valve V one end of the cylinder is connected to pressure and the other to exhaust, and the roll 2 is steered accordingly. Independent handoperated steering gear is provided and comprises a hand-wheel 24 on a shaft 23 having a worm gearing with a worm-wheel 21 loosely mounted on a shaft 20 geared at 19, 18 to the steering pivot shaft 4. When the hand gear is to be used a cover-plate 28 is removed and the worm wheel 21 is fixed to the shaft 20 by a readily-removable key 26. In the case of a steam roller boiler steam is used in the steering cylinder 8.
