Embossing; bed - reciprocating apparatus; driving machines.-A stereotype matrix machine in which the bed is operated by hydraulic means and is adapted to come to rest at the end of each stroke comprises a frame a supporting a bed b which co-operates with a roller c. The bed b carries on its upper side a rack n in gear with a wheel k on the roller c, and on its under side a rack m which is geared by wheels j, h, g to a rack on a piston-rod f. The rod f carries two pistons e working in two cylinders d, d<1> to which water is admitted by pipes o, o<1> leading from a valve p. The valve s is operated by a crank u, link y, and bell-crank w from a slide x, which is reciprocated by a pin v on the bed, so that at both ends of the stroke, the valve ports are closed to bring the machine to rest. The slide x is moved by hand to re-start the machine.
