Abstract

567,241. Steering gears for furnace charging machines. WELLMAN SMITH OWEN ENGINEERING CORPORATION, Ltd., and KAY, I. April 22, 1943, No. 6513. [Class 135] A mobile floor-type charging machine for furnaces, forging manipulator or like machine, comprising in combination two running wheels at the front, a castor mounted on a revoluble vertical shaft at the rear, hydraulic means engaged with the shaft to turn the castor, a steering wheel or the like and a control valve for the hydraulic means operatively connected to the steering wheel and to said shaft so that movement of the steering wheel moves the valve in one direction to cause turning of the castor and movement of such shaft during said turning of the castor returns the valve to its neutral position. As shown in the Figures, the castor comprises a pair of adjacent wheels mounted on a vertical shaft rotated by a pair of opposed pistons acting through a rack and pinion. A toothed wheel 40 loosely mounted on the vertical shaft is coupled through a pinion 41 and reduction gearing with the vertical shaft and carries an eccentric pin coupled by a link 38 with an arm 36 on a shaft 37. The lower end of this shaft has an arm 35 connected by a link 34 with a floating lever 9 connected at the other end by a link 31 with a toothed segment co-operating with a pinion rotatable by the steering wheel 13. An intermediate point of the lever 9 is coupled to the spindle 7 of the control valve 4. This valve comprises spaced lands 5, 5 of the same width as the ports 6 which are connected by pipes 21 with the power cylinders. The valve casing is connected to a pressure supply pipe 19 and to an exhaust pipe 20, the valve member being provided with passages 22 to permit exhaust from the end of the casing opposite the exhaust pipe. In a modification, one end of the floating lever is coupled to the steering wheel and the other end to the control valve, while an intermediate port is coupled by a flexible cable to a pulley on the castor shaft. The cable is maintained under tension by a tension spring.
