Abstract

523,427. Grinding glass strip. PILKING- TON BROS., Ltd., and WALDRON, F. B. Jan. 6, 1939, No. 490. [Class 60] In apparatus for surfacing glass strip on both sides simultaneously, the strip is fed through the machine by pairs of feed rollers at least one roller of each pair being in two parts gripping the strip one on each side of its centre line the parts being independently driven as to speed. In one form the tubular roller part 7 having a rubber covering 9 is driven from a central shaft 10 through a planet carrier 20 which also drives the part 8 that can turn on bearings 15 on the tubular extension of the shaft 7. In a modification the central shafts are fixed and both rollers are in two parts being driven by shafts at the sides of the machine the shafts being connected through differential gearing. In another form the strip 1 is fed through the grinders 32 by divided feed rolls 24 driven by helical gearing from shafts 33 driven by separate motors 35 with cross connection through a clutch 39. Should the strip tend to deflect to one side or the other the clutch is opened and the torque of the appropriate motor is increased to centralize the strip, after which the clutch is again closed.
