Feb. 20, 1935, No. 5508. [Class 60] [See also Group XXX] In apparatus for making glass strip, and comprising a strip forming apparatus, a lehr, and a grinding-machine, and wherein the strip is fed by rollers, the rollers 1 of the strip forming apparatus and the rollers of the lehr 3 are driven from a shaft 13, and the rollers 10 of the grinding-maohine are driven from a shaft 31, the shaft 13, 31 being connected together by means including a device for varying the relative speeds of the shafts, and for disconnecting the shafts so that each can be driven independently by its own motor. The rollers 1, rollers 2 of a strip receiving bed, the lehr rollers, on shafts 4, the rollers 6 of a cutting-table 5 and the rollers 7 of a conveyer are driven, through bevel, or bevel-and-chain gearing 16 ... 22, from a shaft 14 driven from an electric motor 11, which also drives the shaft 13. The shaft 13 drives, by chain 24, a variable speed gearing 25 driving a shaft 26 carrying an axially slidable gear 27 which may mesh with a gear 28 on shaft 29, which drives the shaft 31 through a magnetic chuck 33 and shaft 34 and gearing 30. A motor 38 also drives, through worm gearing 40, a shaft 41 carrying an axially slidable gear 42 which may mesh with a gear 44 on shaft 29, and the shafts 26, 41 drive an indicator showing when the shafts are running in synchronism; the wheels 27, 42 are driven through free-wheel clutches by their shafts. The apparatus is normally driven by the two motors 11, 38 simultaneously, and the relative speeds of the parts may be varied ; further, the shaft 34 may be stopped without stopping the strip forming apparatus or the lehr. An ammeter 53 indicates when the motor 38 is given its proper share of the load.
